The 'Everything Shower' is Trending on TikTok – Here’s What You Need to Know

The latest viral self-care hack is the perfect combination of adulting and relaxing. With 2.7 billion views on TikTok, the “Everything Shower” has quickly become the simplest way to care for your face, body, and hair. The way it works is you combine your everyday skincare regimen with your in-shower hair and body routine (and nail care if you’re feeling jazzy) to save you time and buy you sanity. Although this ritual might look a little different to everyone, according to Lindsey Zubritsky, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist with nearly 900K followers on TikTok, there are six components at its core: shampooing and conditioning the hair, exfoliating the body, shaving, washing (the body), double cleansing the face, and moisturizing the skin.

The order of operation can get a little funky depending on which part of the body you prefer to tackle first — and there’s quite some debate about the right way to “Everything Shower” — but Dr. Zubritsky assures the best method to avoid acne and reduce irritation and razor bumps is to exfoliate the body before shaving, rinse the hair (this includes shampoo and conditioner) before washing the body, and moisturize the skin before slugging (applying products like Vaseline or Aquaphor ointment to seal in moisture). To follow, Aamna Adel, MBBS, MRCP, a London-based dermatologist with 1.3 million followers on TikTok, notes that when slugging you should apply only a thin layer of product on the face, and on days when using products that contain retinol or exfoliating acids or when acne is present, avoid it altogether to prevent irritation.

Depending on your everyday regimen, your “Everything Shower” might also include pre-bathing practices like sipping your favorite wine or mocktail and listening to a relaxing podcast, as well as post-shower care like lounging in a robe and applying a face mask. If you’re not sure where to begin, count on TikTok for everything from ritual inspirations to product recommendations, with videos (like @summermoonie “My 25 step #everythingshower”) for more advanced self-care gurus and channels (like sustainable beauty brand @netzerocompany) that cater to wellness minimalists.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum, your goal is to find products and a routine that you love, even if your “Everything Shower” only happens once in a while. In fact, one of the best parts about this trend is that you can split the all-encompassing routine into several mini routines throughout the week if an extensive regimen seems daunting. TikToker @maddycassidy does this by focusing on hair care one day and body care another. As long as you’re optimizing your time spent bathing and enjoying your “me” time in the process, you can pretty much do whatever you want.
